Hayedo’s History

Inhabited by elves and fairies

The legend says that certain coal miners and woodcutters from Montejo state that the forest known as El Chaparral, is inhabited by elves and fairies and these fairies, playful and curious, liked to butter visitors and walkers up with their caresses and sweet songs.
These sweet and appealing songs serve to take the walkers to their dens and turn them into animals such as lizards or robins in order to provide the forest with more inhabitants and so that the forest achieved a greatest charm.
We can not know if this legend used as the explanation for the arrival of the fauna to Hayedo de Montejo, is true or false but what is certainly true is that by 1460 the village buys from a nobleman from Sepúlveda the beeches and oaks forest known as El Chaparral, nowadays Hayedo de Montejo de la Sierra.
